Top 10 Famous Last Words (Camping Edition)

January 22, 2013

A friend of mine tells me she is looking forward to Henry and Alice: Into The Wild because (for her) the word “camping” has long been associated with the phrase “famous last words.” As an armchair outdoorsman, this had not occurred to me, but the more I research the subject on the Internet, the more convinced I am that my friend is right. Here is my top 10 list of famous last words (camping edition), in reverse order, of course, to build suspense.

10. “Just one more tiny little hill to climb. It’s all flat after that.”

9. “The guy who sold me the tent said it was simple to set up even in blustery conditions.”

8. “There aren’t many bugs at this time of year.”

7. “Who has the insect repellant?”

6. “You’ll be fine. It doesn’t look that bad.”

5. “Of course they’re edible. They’re just wild mushrooms.”

4. “I thought you packed the toilet paper.”

3. “I’m pretty sure that’s not poison ivy.”

2. “In all the years we’ve been coming here, I’ve never seen a snake.”

1. “Quiet! Did you hear that?”

You’re very welcome, and have a happy holiday!

p.s. If you come across any other famous last words for campers, kindly email them to me and I will update my Top 10 list.

Henry And Alice: Into The Wild runs from January 23 – February 10, 2013. Visit the Globe Theatre website for more details, cast information, and to purchase tickets.
